Week Two

Unfortunately this week of the project I fell very ill and was unable to come in to class, however towards the end of the week I began working from home to try catch up, and started to generate some ideas in my sketchbook.

Me and Bailie had spoken about wanting to explore collage in both a digital and analogue format as we both prefer this different modes and would be interesting to merge them together for this project.

Bailie had sent me some inspiration he was looking at for the ident, including this piece, The Politics of Eternity, by artist Dustin Yellin.

We both really liked the aesthetics of this and the idea of travelling through tunnels, with lots of visuals and colours and little moving elements all coming together.

I began playing around with collage using newspapers to create some visuals. I found that I really love the look of crossword puzzles; I love how uniform the lines and squares are and yet the blacked out squares can feel very random and it feels like they want to move.

I started to just cut up squares and arrange them in ways that felt like they had movement. I really like the result of this, and got me thinking about how it could translate into a moving test. I immediately got ideas of a ‘glitchy’ and ‘pixelated’ effect.

I wanted to also experiment with the typography and working with text and the logo. I am really inspired by Cecil Toucan’s work with typography collage and love the way it looks so chopped up, and made me start thinking about how I could incorporate that movement in the ident.

Testing out some compositions for a collage.

I was very pleased with the outcome of some of these collages, however I did notice that trying to visually communicate the words ‘SubTV’ was a lot more difficult than I anticipated, and may not work for a logo reveal, but could be interesting to explore for other areas of the ident.

Week One

After being introduced to the brief, to create a TV ident for the student music channel SubTV, we began the first week with a workshop based around typography.

Our first task was to go around the room and try and seek out letters, looking especially for S,U, B, T, V. I found this task quite difficult and not sure I enjoyed it, but it was a good warm up to get me thinking about typography.

Our next task was to create our own typography out of any materials. For the project I want to explore collage, so experimented with using positive and negative space to create the alphabet.

I think this outcome is quite successful and has sparked some ideas for the ident. I really like the physical texture of the newspaper and the different types if text and font you can see in different directions.

I want to continue experimenting with collage and newspapers, playing with the text and font to create the sub tv logo.

We then did a workshop with Mario, working together to create a larger moving sequence, playing with shape and scale and simple movement/transformation.

I really enjoyed this exercise as a way of playing with mark making and I enjoy seeing the whole piece together as a composition. Although I don’t think I will be working in this way for this project, I would like to revisit method in future work.
